Diving

Papua New Guinea’s coral reefs form a huge natural marine park. Located in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, it is said to have up to twice as many marine species as the waters of the Red Sea and up to five times as many as the Carribean.

Divers enjoy a huge diversity of dive sites including barrier reefs, coral walls (drop off), coral gardens, patch reefs, fringing reefs, sea grass beds, coral atolls, and wreck dive sites.

The wreck sites provide a collection of ships, aircraft and submarine wrecks from World War 2. The average water temperature varies from 25 degrees Celsius along the edge of the Coral Sea to 29 degrees Celsius in the Bismark Sea.

Dive operators offer both Land Base and Live-Aboard Dive Tours.

Land Base Tours normally consist of a day tour taking up to three dives whilst Live-Aboard Tours are on average up to six days.

Most land-Base Operators offer resort type dive courses and have fully equipped dive shops with diving and snorkelling equipment available for hire.

For those bringing their own equipment there are facilities available in the main cities to clean equipment.

The Papua New Guinea Diving Association has an environmental Code of Ethics that they honour to ensure that our country’s sea beds, reefs and marine life are conserved and protected.

PAPUA NEW GUINEA DIVER’S ASSOCIATION

ENVIRONMENTAL CODE OF ETHICS

AT A TIME WHEN CORAL REEFS WORLDWIDE ARE UNDER THREAT, THE PNGDA RECOGNISES THE EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY AND CONDITION OF PNG’S NATURAL MARINE RESOURCES AND THEIR IMPORTANCE FOR BOTH VILLAGE LIFE AND THE NATION, AND PLEDGES THAT THE ASSOCIATION WILL DO EVERYTHING IN ITS POWER TO ENSURE THESE RESOURCES, INCLUDING THE SEA BED, REEFS, WRECKS AND THE MARINE LIFE THAT LIVES ON THEM, AND IN THE WATER SURROUNDING THEM, WILL BE CONSERVED.

2.ENSURE THAT DIVERS IN THEIR CARE ARE ADVISED TO ASSIST EACH OTHER TO FOLLOW CAREFUL DIVE PRACTICES. THE USE OF THE “V” SIGNAL IS RECOMMENDED SO THAT DIVERS CAN INDICATE TO OTHER DIVERS THAT THEY ARE DAMAGING OR HARASSING MARINE LIFE.

3.ALLOW ANY DIVE SITES SHOWING ANY SIGNS OF DAMAGE, FROM WHATEVER CAUSE TO BE ALLOWED TIME TO RECOVER BEFORE DIVERS REVISIT THE SITE. ROTATION OF DIVE SITES IS ENCOURAGED.

4.PROMOTE THE USE OF MOORINGS, AND/OR DESIGNATED ANCHORING SITES ON SAND AND RUBBLE PATCHES ADJACENT TO THE DIVING AREA, FOR REGULARLY DIVED SITES.

KAR KAR HIDEAWAY Wadau Plantation Kar Kar Island, Madang Province Contact: Derek and Joell Middleton Telephone: 853 7481 Facsimile: 853 7473

Kar Kar Island is a traquil hideaway, 60 miles north east of Madang offering relaxation for those who need to unwind from the hustle and bustle of city life. It is a volcanic island covered in cocoa and coconut plantations. The last eruption was in 1978. The island people still live a simple life from subsistence farming with the main cash crop being cocoa and coconuts.

Although not a dive resort, it is surrounded by exceptional diving and fishing grounds and is used as an extension to those established dive sites in the Madang waters. Diving can be organised through Jais Aben Resort and the other Madang based operations.

Kar Kar Hideaway is a small intimate resort situated within a working cocoa and coconut plantation and is the only modern accommodation available on the island. The Hideaway consists of two waterfront bungalows with an emphasis on a traditional feel.

Both are located fifteen feet from a private beach with large verandahs overlooking the ocean. A larger bungalow, suited to families, can sleep up to six people and has a living room and fully equipped kitchen. The other bungalow sleeps up to three. Meals can be provided and are served at the main plantation house.

Kar Kar Island boasts some of the finest diving in the Bismarck Sea and is suited to the more experienced diver. Diving is primarily wall diving consisting of vast array of large pelagic fish including dog tooth tuna, barracuda, mackerel and various sharks.

For the non diver, walks to the volcanic crater can be organised. This is full day for experienced walkers. Other easier coastal walks, coach tours and picnics can be arranged.

Islands Airways, Madang, telephone 852 2601, fly to Kar Kar Monday to Friday and Saturday morning. The Hideaway is located 20 miles from the airstrip. For the more adventurous traveller, cargo boats operate from Agmark Wharf, Madang.

When currents and big fish beckon, a three-day trip to Bagabag, 35Nm from Madang would excite the most experienced diver. It can be difficult sometimes to decide after a dive at Bagabag which one of the many sharks, dogtooth tuna or Spanish mackerel was the biggest and which one came the closest. Lissinung Island Reef Surrounding about two thirds of Lissinung Island, this reef is an ideal spot for photographers and for night diving. You may encounter seahorses, anemones with clownfish, crocodile fish and hundreds of other species. Off the island is the wreck of a yacht, which was sunk serveral years ago.

Echuca Patch This is a large ridge rising from 45m to within 12m of the surface and lying in the open water about 20 minutes from the resort. A Korean fishing boat lies on its starboard side on top of this ridge. This point is a magnet for barracudas and jacks.

Albatross Channel A narrow channel between two islands, 25 minutes from Lissinung, this passage sucks pelagic and reef fish between and into its flanks twice a day as the tides rushes in and out. Eagle rays, mantas, tunas, barracudas and reef sharks can be seen.

Stubborn Hellion This is an American B25 Bomber (Flying Fortress), which was shot down in 1944 by the Japanese army during the battle around Kavieng. The aeroplane sits in 12m of water, halfway between Lissinung Island and Albatross Channel

Selapiu Tip Another terrific drop-off with beautiful corals and lots of reef fish. Big turtles, dolphins and sharks can be seen.

Planet Channel Also called Eagle Ray Passage, this narrow channel does not need any further description. Covered with soft corals, this spot is like an aquarium with all kinds of fish.

Mitsubishi Jake This Japanese plane wreck from WW2 sits upright in a depth of 10m and is covered with corals and anemones. Seahorses and cuttlefish surround it. Situated in the lagoon between New Hanover and the Tsoi Islands, it is a beautiful trip of 35 minutes from Lissinung Island.

Turtle Reef This beautiful coral garden in the middle of the open sea, about 40 minutes from Lissinung is famous for its turtles, which are attracted by a certain type of sponge. Large pelagics are often seen.

Silvertip Reef One hour 15 minutes from Lissinung just off the coast of Tsoi Island, this reef is known for its big silvertip sharks, which come very close to the diver. Here everyone is able to take a very close look at these fantastic creatures.

Big Fish Reef This reef was named because of the frequency of visits by whale sharks. But the real attraction is the beautiful corals and schooling barracudas, jacks and batfish. Ten minutes away from Tsoi Island, the reef is located in the deep ocean.

Three Island Harbour A further 40 minute trip from Tsoi Island, at the north coast of New Hanover, a Japanese supply ship and a small submarine were sunk by the Americans in 1944. Beautifully overgrown, these two wrecks attract masses of fish.

The underwater visibility for most dives is between 30 and 40 metres and at times can be 50 to 60 metres. In bad weather and strong currents it might drop down to 20 metres
